Of Maiden’s jealousy and other flowers

The small orchid behind Sharjah’s oceanfront resort Radisson Blu has some lovely specimens of flowering plants. Walking among the water sprayed garden with its petrichor aroma, it seemed as if the desert had receded and given place to a mangrove. Constant twittering by hordes of doves, crows, mynas and pigeons add to the forest ambience. A look over the low walls surrounding the garden reminds you that this is still Sharjah and that the desert is only a few miles away.

Growing vigorously with a liana habit, this climber can reach 10 meters tall or more. Its viny stems are purplish grey in colour, covered with lenticels, rough to the touch.
